First Day Hikes, New Year's Day The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission offers 12 FREE DAYS each year when visitors are not required to display a Discover Pass for a day visit to a park. Volunteers of America Western Washington, Sky Valley to Host 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off and Cornbread Competition The Sky Valley Youth Coalition at Volunteers of America Western Washington is once again hosting their annual Chili Cook-Off fundraiser event! The event takes place on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Expected to be even better than the 2018 event, the 2019 Chili Cook-Off is adding a Cornbread Competition to open up the event to more participants. Cost for a full chili dinner will be $5 per adult, $4 for children under 13 years of age, and for adults 64 and over. Entertainment will be provided by the teens. The 2019 Chili Cook-Off and Cornbread Competition will be held at Grace Christian Fellowship at 14030 Sultan Basin Road in Sultan, due to construction on the VOA’s A Frame (Community and Senior Center). Transportation is available from town to the church if needed. Entry forms and rules are available on the Sky Valley Youth Coalition’s Facebook page, from the VOA Resource Center office at 701 1st Street in Sultan, or directly from Ruth Shapovalov or one of the SVYC teens. There is no cost to enter the contest, however you must provide at least four quarts of chili or a 13 x 9 size pan of corn bread (or equivalent). Prizes are gold, bronze, or silver medals and an “overall best” trophy.
